Some of DB's favourite records of 2007!

TUWHARE by various New Zealand artists. Renound Maori poet Hone Tuwhare’s poetry set to music featuring artists such as Don McGlashan ,Dallas Tamaira from Fat Freddy’s Drop,Goldenhorse, Goldenhorse, Strawpeople featuring Fiona McDonald. A beautiful record and wonderful words.

BOXER by The National from Brooklyn. Kind of Comsat Angels meets Echo and the Bunneymen and whilst lo cked up in a hotel in Adelaide where I witnessed an outsie verandah porn video being made across at the hotel next door and a suicide man jumped from 15th floorit made the perfect soundtrack.

CANNOT BUY MY SOUL by various aust artists and Kev Carmody. Artists such as The Pigrams, John Butler, Bernard Fanning do covers of Kevs great songs plus a disk of kevs originals which was always going to be the better disk but the cover versions are pretty interesting too.

ORPHANS: BRAWLERS, BAWLERS AND BASTARDS by Tom Waits. I know this was a 2006 release but I didn’t cotton on to it til this year. Normally triple albums can be reduced to one decent album but I love all of this...he rocks better than most, and the kids bedtime story is priceless.

PAST PRESENT FUTURE by Tiki Taane.ex member of Salmonella Dub discovers his Maori roots and comes up with a wonderful sub groove record.

ESCAPE FROM DENGUE FEVER by Dengue Fever. Traditional Cambodian diva songs joined with kina trashy guitar. Out of California. Sounds odd but it really works.

LONG TAEM BIFO by Kaja Riddim Klan. From Vanuatu, this is a beautifully melancholic cd of homeland songs.

COMICOPERA by Robert Wyatt. What an amazing man...

GURUMUL by Geoffrey Gurumul Yunupingu. This cd hasn’t been released yet (go to the skinnyfish website) but this will be a major indigenous Australian release from this Yolngu singer songwriter. He has a beautiful voice. It is shameful that it has been such a longtime since an indigenous Australian artist has had any recognition and I think Gurumul is the cd to do that.

YELEMA by Mamani Keita and Nicolas Repac. She is a songstress from Mali, he a guitarist from France, Her voice is incredible and the arrangements sublime. A bit like Baaba Maal but with a woman’s voice. Great live too, I saw them at WOMEXSeville.

NEON BIBLE by Arcade Fire. My daughter gave me this cd...I love it when theres no generation gap. Big sound and arrangements great record.

IN RAINBOWS by Radiohead...Can handle pretty much anything this band does...though I think I preferred Thom Yorke’s solo record.

WHOLENESS AND SEPARATION by Halou. Great texture and space and choosing when not to play and Rebecca’s voice is such a wonderful thing. Rebecca and Ryan’s side project album “Beneath Trembling Lanterns “ is a beautiful record too.

MATOGO by the MOAB STRINGBAND feat George Telek. I know its a bit rich to nominate a record on your own label, but this album means such a lot to me and I love the MOAB sound and all that they represent and I am on a life long mission to convert as many people as I can to string band music.

NERVOUS DOLL DANCING by Francesca Mounfort. Helen’s niece...theres a lot of Helen in francesca...imagine Helen playing with glitschy blips and blops. Tis a fine record.

Seasons greetings to all the cake fans...

New cake record!

My Friend the Chocolate Cake have finished recording their 5th studio album, tentatively titled "The Home Improvements Album". Mostly recorded at the Enormodome, although the band also spent a day at Dex putting 4 tracks down live, with a certain dose of improv in there...leading to a couple of tracks that have a slightly different sound. Songs of carnivals, bustling mad instrumentals, suburban pictures, lifes, weather coast in the Solomons and an adolescent love song called Pentacostal Girl, some textural moments where the string grind and the piano sustains...a couple of belting pop songs. The album is being mixed as we speak...Luke Flood is doing the artwork.

The Cake recorded 11 songs and 4 instrumentals whilst in the studio, of which they'll select the best for the album.

Home Improvements
She dreams in different colours
Pentacostal Girl
Lets go walk this town
Hymn for the Carnies
Happyland
This Life Tonight
Weather Coast
Without a Bolt
Athletes of Persia
Mad Procession
Improv
J Patap
Ab piano muse

The band will playing shows in November, so keep an eye on the live guide for details.
